When it comes to fairytales, everyone loves a happy ending. Cinderella is one of the sweetest fairytales ever written, with its hard-working heroine finding her prince in the end. This holiday season, Ross Petty puts a Toronto-centric spin on the familiar tale, adding several of his famous “fractured fairy tale” characters into the mix. Cinderella—The Gags to Riches Family Musical! is a hilariously funny musical production full of talented performers with a few surprises thrown in.

It may be a fairy tale that everyone is familiar with, mostly due to its immortalization by Walt Disney in 1989, but as a sea sponge and clownfish explain excitedly, this version has been “bent” slightly. Ross Petty has done it again this year with his holiday show The Little Mermaid: Ontario's O-FISH-AL Family Musical, a colour-saturated, music-filled, hysterical twist on the beloved tale.

Nothing, except they’re all part of Ross Petty’s latest “fractured fairy tale,” Snow White: The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical, now playing at the Elgin Theatre. In traditional English pantomime style, Petty’s current offering incorporates a wealth of Canadian cultural references and modern music into a beloved fairy tale, rounded out by a phenomenally talented cast.
