The work of Canadian folk legend Joni Mitchell inspired Quality Productions' latest multidisciplinary piece Urge For Going, now playing at the Tarragon Theatre Mainspace as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival. Featuring beautiful puppetry, animation and live music by Ronley Teper and Ben Hermann, the play tells the story of a prairie girl who dreams of leaving her Saskatchewan hometown to follow in the footsteps of her favourite musician.

After a sold-out run last year, the hit musical Avenue Q returns to the Lower Ossington Theatre this summer with two new leads: Jacqueline Martin plays the dual role of Kate Monster and Lucy, and Graham Fleming tackles the parts of Princeton and Rod. We caught up with the dynamic duo to find out more about their experience working on the show (opens June 20).

What do a stylish cow, a stage diva, a cross-dressing military man, an Albertan house wife and a couple of crazy clowns have in common? They are all characters in Ronnie Burkett’s latest show, on stage now at the Berkeley Street Theatre as part of this year’s Luminato Festival. Inspired by the illegal underground “daisy” puppet shows of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, The Daisy Theatre is a mostly improvised production hosted by Burkett with a resident company of more than 30 marionettes.

Misery is a uniquely human condition, we are reminded, in The Old Trout Puppet Workshop‘s Ignorance, a morbidly funny and touching look at our prehistoric ancestors now playing at the Berkeley Street Theatre. This “world wide open creation puppet show” was written with the help of anonymous contributors on The Old Trout’s website, the result of which is an arftul and entertaining examination of mankind’s ignorance through the ages—part nature documentary, part Hitchhicker’s Guide for the ice age.
